SAN DIEGO--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 13, 2007--Illumina, Inc.(NASDAQ:ILMN) today announced that it has now received more than 75orders for the Genome Analyzer, the Company's DNA sequencing, geneexpression profiling, and micro-RNA analysis platform. In addition tothe Broad Institute, which has already installed 16 Genome Analyzersout of a near term goal of 20, demand for the sequencing system hasincreased significantly among genome centers, core laboratories, industrial laboratories, and individual academic centers worldwide.
"We are pleased with the rapid adoption of the Genome Analyzer, and enthusiastic about its potential to change the way geneticanalysis is conducted," said John West, Senior Vice President andGeneral Manager, Sequencing Business. "In early 2007 we accomplished amajor milestone, achieving sequencing throughput of more than abillion bases of high-quality data per flow cell. Investigators arenow proposing projects that involve hundreds of large genomes becauseof the productivity and the efficiency that the Genome Analyzerprovides. By delivering economical highly accurate sequence data, theresearch community now has the power to carry out studies that aretransforming genetic analysis."
Illumina's Genome Analyzer employs proprietarysequencing-by-synthesis chemistry, enabling researchers to sequence ahuman genome for less than one percent of the cost of today'sstate-of-the-art capillary sequencing platforms. By producing greaterthan 100 times the output of current genetic analyzers at a fractionof their costs, the Genome Analyzer is enabling researchers tosuccessfully carry out novel genome wide analysis, such as globalmapping of DNA-protein interaction, digital expression profiling, small RNA discovery and profiling, and targeted and genome-widesequencing for discovery of novel polymorphisms.
"The demand for the Genome Analyzer, as evidenced by our 75thorder, provides a strong indication of the acceptance of thistechnology from the scientific community," said Jay Flatley, Presidentand Chief Executive Officer of Illumina. "This past month we have alsoseen incredible scientific progress using this platform, includingmultiple published studies detailing novel and powerful applicationsof the Genome Analyzer. These studies, which have been published inpeer-reviewed journals, were completed and accepted for publication inrecord time, indicating the immediate impact the Genome Analyzer ishaving on the course of today's genetic analysis research."
About Illumina
Illumina is a leading developer, manufacturer and marketer ofnext-generation life science tools and integrated systems for thelarge scale analysis of genetic variation and biological function.Using our proprietary technologies, we provide a comprehensive line ofproducts and services that currently serve the sequencing, genotyping, and gene expression markets, and we expect to enter the market formolecular diagnostics. Our customers include leading genomic researchcenters, pharmaceutical companies, academic institutions, clinicalresearch organizations and biotechnology companies. Our tools provideresearchers around the world with the performance, throughput, costeffectiveness and flexibility necessary to perform the billions ofgenetic tests needed to extract valuable medical information fromadvances in genomics and proteomics. We believe this information willenable researchers to correlate genetic variation and biologicalfunction, which will enhance drug discovery and clinical research, allow diseases to be detected earlier and permit better choices ofdrugs for individual patients.
